As part of a strategy to increase transportation ridership in the Denver and Boulder area, this project includes a redesign of the downtown station for Boulder’s popular HOP bus, complete with a detailed streetscape and transit shelter design. Designs follow NACTO standards and ADA laws to increase the comfort, reliability, and accessibility of the entire transit system.

Boulder Transit Revitalization

Streetscape Design

This bus station uses a near-side bus bulb stop configuration. The bus is not required to leave the travel lane, allowing for quick and reliable stops. Bus boarding design relies on NACTO guidance and ADA requirements to ensure passengers of all abilities may use the station. Paths around the bus shelter are unobstructed and wide enough for wheelchairs, and slopes on the site are flat enough to comply with ADA requirements. We use universal design elements such as yellow warning zones, and the bus station is equipped with visual and audible cues to alert passengers to arriving buses.

We also designed new bus stops at key stations along the HOP route. Orange-colored aluminum is used to create unique-looking structures throughout the city as a branding technique. This bus station was designed with a slanted roof, taking into consideration the angles of the sun as well as shelter from snow, wind, and rain. The bus stop is well-lit and includes 21st-century amenities such as LED transit route displays and phone chargers.
